The Come and Take It flag has become a banner for defending Americans’ second amendment rights, and from government in general. The Battle of Gonzales was the first military engagement of the Texas Revolution. In 1835, the Residents of Gonzalez, TX and neighboring communities refused to give up a cannon to Mexican troops as unrest spread throughout the country. This symbolic act helped inspire other Texian and American patriots to rebel and bring about Texas’s independence from Mexico in 1836 (not long after the Alamo and later the Battle of San Jacinto).
